NEW AND FEATURED THIS MONTH
Our
Winter Propagation efforts were only slightly slowed
by the freeze in December and the flooding in January. The aeoniums
took the biggest hit, with some echeverias not far behind. But the
Aloes are bursting forth! And the California natives are lush with
winter rains.
Our
Houseplant room has been a big success this
winter so we're adding to our collection of ferns and foliage and
especially to our collection of
Terrarium plants. You can expect some really nice
peperomias over the next few months, but not ready quite yet.
Organic
Veggie Starts are back! Our first mix for your early
spring crop should be out by next weekend. And more varieties coming
fast and furious over the next few weeks. Look for the lettuces,
greens, peas and herbs, and prep your garden in between the rains.
Tomatoes coming soon!
Finally, we have added
Rice-Hull Eco-Pots to
our mix. You'll be seeing more of our 4", quart and gallon plants
coming out in compostable rice-hull pots. We're trying to do away
with the last remnants of plastic for the plants we grow. Most of
the cactus and succulents will still be grown in terra cotta, since
they really do breathe better, especially in these wet winters. And
don't worry, if you prefer the terra cotta, we'll repot for you at
no charge.

Sarcolcaulon crassicaule in bloom.
Open 9-5 weekdays, 10-5 weekends;
Closed Tuesdays. We will be closed the morning of
Thursday, Feb. 4. We should be open by Noon.
SUCCULENTS

Aloe striata - a new crop of 4" - and they're in our new rice hull
eco-pots!

Aloe plicatilis - also in 4" rice hull eco-pots - these prove to be
a very fast seller when we have them in 4", so we've doubled our
production to keep up with demand. Plus, of course, we still have
larger ones available too, including a truly amazing 24" box.

Aloe spinosissima is a beautiful low-growing mounding plant.

Aloe species - we have no idea what this species is, but when it
gets bigger and blooms, we'll let you know.

Aloe cryptopoda in 4" - you asked for smaller ones, you get smaller
ones.

Crassula perforata "Tom Thumb" - a miniature version of the standard
C. perforata.

Crassula "Jade Necklace" is actually a completely different species
from the various C. perforatas. Now you know.

Ornithogalum caudatum - Pregnant Onion - we'll be bringing out
larger gallon-size plants in spring, but for now, we give you: 4"
rice-hull eco-pots!

Senecio repens are back in the 1 gallons. We also have them in 4"
pots. Big blue beans.
CACTUS

Polaskia chichipe is our only new cactus this time of year. Very
similar to the more well known Myrtillocactus, but more compact in
form and a whole lot spinier. They've actually been out for about a
month, but I forgot to feature them last month, so give it a go.
CALIFORNIA NATIVES

Heuchera "Stormy Seas" is not strictly a native, per se, but it's a
hybrid from a native species, so we go with the flow, and brought
out this dark and sultry purple groundcover.

Adiantum capillus-veneris, Maidenhair fern, is a lush and hardy
shade loving native. We haven't had any for about 6 months, so we're
happy to bring them out now, along with sword ferns. They like the
winter wet.
PERENNIALS

Astelia nivicola "Red Gem" is our first crop in our new 1 gallon
size rice-hull pots. Say hello to the future!

Euphorbia amygfaloides v. robbiae is a lush, low-growing wood
spurge. Perfect for massing effects, totally deer-resistent.

Euphorbia "Redwing" is a brightly colored medium height wood spurge,
great for borders and also totally deer-resistent, as are all the
spurges, as it so happens.

Euphorbia amygdaloides "Purpurea" - the plants are a bit small yet,
but the rice hull pots! Oh, those rice hull pots!

Artemisia pycnocephala "David's Choice" - the white foliage will lay
flat along the ground.

Epidendrum ibaguense is a hardy orchid that blooms all year long. So
easy to take care of, your garden will be bright and colorful all
year long.

Astelia banksii - very similar to the A. nervosa, but much more
compact. This New Zealand alternative to flax will not get out of
hand and grow to 8ft. tall, I guarantee.

Spring Hanging Baskets - we've gotten a jump on putting together low
water perennials in hanging baskets for spring. And they've even
started to bloom

HOUSEPLANTS

Spring Bulbs - once they've bloomed out, you can plant them in your
garden and they will pop up so cute and friendly next year.
Orchids. Because flowers are pretty.

Let's see, that's a Cymbidium hanging down...

... and a Dendrobium in chartreuse.

Zamia furfuracea - Cardboard Palm
