So many flowers. So so many flowers. On this one plant, that is.

Opuntia imbricata, also known as Cylindropuntia imbricata, or even as the Chain-link Cholla.
I don’t know why.
But it’s a nice medium height shrubby cholla, not the most dangerous one around, but still pretty nasty.

Hey CactusBlog,
I recently came home with three segments of this cholla variant after a trip to southern Colorado. Will this species thrive indoors on my East facing windowsill? It gets roughly 3-4 hours of direct sun starting around 9am.
After callusing, I planted the trio about 2 inches from one another forming a triangle in a 6 inch deep pot. The soil comes from a mixture of 5 parts perlite, 5 parts miracle-gro cactus soil, and 1 part local sand/river stone(strawberry creek). Do I need to add more clay material to this mixture?

Andy,
I do not recommend using any miracle grow products on your cactus at this time of year – too many fertilizers as the plant is going dormant. As it is, you are unlikely to get the cuttings to fully root until spring, but they should be able to survive until then. In general we would recommend more sun, but it may do fine with morning sun.
Where are you located? We have a Strawberry Creek here in Berkeley – but I assume there are Strawberry Creeks all around the country too. Don’t add clay to the mix, but if you are local, we do mix our own cactus soil that we would recommend using.
