Parodia subterranea
Interesting name. I wonder if it got that name because it’s an underground growing cactus, most of the time, or if it got that name becasue it was named for someone named Subterranea. Saucy!
Anderson’s The Cactus Family tells me nothing. Oh well. On to the next question.

My guess is that it’s both and neither: it’s named subterranea because it only grows underneath people named “Terranea.” Which is why A) nobody names their kids “Terranea” anymore, and B) Parodia subterranea is endangered.

Having done a bit more research into this matter, I discover that there is in fact someone named Terranea, living in a small village outside Salzburg in the Austrian countryside.
Actually, it turns out Terranea is a resort in Palos Verde with their own blog – http://www.terranea.com/california-resort-blog.php
Now you know.
